Complete Concussion Management

With growing awareness of the impact of minor head injuries, more people are looking for health care professionals who are certified in how to best treat concussions. Dynamic Ottawa is one of eight clinics in Ottawa whose physiotherapists and chiropractors are certified in Complete Concussion Management (CCM). We are proud to be part of this multidisciplinary approach to treating concussions. The CCM certification program is one of the most detailed and well researched programs in Canada for concussion rehabilitation and baseline testing.

What is Complete Concussion Management?

“Complete Concussion Management™ (CCM) is a multidisciplinary network of chiropractors, physicians, physiotherapists and neuropsychologists, committed to offering the highest level of concussion care to athletes of all ages. As part of this commitment, CCM has invested heavily in the development of cutting edge baseline concussion testing and research-based “Return-to-Learn” and “Return-to-Play” protocols.”

Who is Complete Concussion Management for?

Complete Concussion Management is a program designed to address the treatment and recovery from all head injuries, not just those sustained during sports. Concussions can occur in a number of different situations, and some head injuries do occur during the course of normal, everyday activities. Dynamic’s team is trained to help you with pre- and post-concussion care, regardless of how you sustained the injury.

Dynamic Physiotherapy and Chiropractic can help with three stages of concussion management: pre-injury baseline testing, acute concussion treatment and post concussion care.

Pre-Injury Baseline Testing

While there is no way to prevent a concussion, there are two important things you can do to prepare yourself or your loved ones in case they do suffer a concussion: baseline testing and education.

Baseline Testing

Baseline testing is a way to measure your pre-injury and current “baseline” state function across a wide range of different brain functions. At Dynamic, we offer baseline testing that measures all of the areas that could be affected by a concussion, including cognitive function, visual function, balance, strength, reaction time, emotionality, sleep, physical symptoms and more.

Our baseline test is an amalgamation of the top research-based tests available today. With this information in place, we’re better prepared to diagnose and treat a concussion, if you suffer one. We can compare your post-concussion state against your previous baseline test, which helps us prepare the safest and most effective treatment plan to get you back to work, life and play.

For people at a high risk of concussion, we recommend you get a baseline test done once per year for as long as you remain at risk, whether it’s from competitive sports, a physically demanding job or other high-risk activities.

The other important aspect of pre-concussion care is education. Dynamic Physiotherapy and Chiropractic offers a 90-minute training course for parents, coaches and teams to help them to better identify and manage concussions in athletes. Each course comes with a manual and covers the definition of a concussion, the causes, the signs and symptoms and what to do in case of a concussion – including when to seek medical attention.

You can book a training session for your group by calling the clinic at 613-435-9144.

Acute Concussion Treatment

First Four Weeks of the Injury

Acute concussion takes place within the first four weeks of getting a concussion. If you think you or a loved one has a concussion, there are some steps you should take immediately. First and foremost, see a health care practitioner as soon as possible.

At Dynamic, our physiotherapists and chiropractors are all certified to diagnose and treat concussions as part of the Complete Concussion Management program. With that specialized training, we’re able to assess you and help build a treatment plan to ensure you’re on the road to recovery as safely as you can be in the critical first four weeks.

Do not return to sport or activities – including work – before seeing a medical professional who is trained in concussion management and if you suspect you have a head injury.

Dynamic’s team will work with you to support you during a recovery plan that benefits from the various approaches we offer including education, dietary suggestions, supplementation, rehabilitation exercises, RMT and acupuncture as needed. Concussions can come with many associated symptoms, and a balanced approach using the right mix of physiotherapy, chiropractic, dietary advice and other services can ensure you have the smoothest recovery possible.

Post-Concussion Care

Four Weeks After the Injury, or Longer

There are times when concussion symptoms, or related injuries, will persist beyond the acute four-week stage of treatment. As a Complete Concussion Management certified practice, Dynamic can address the unique concerns involved in long-term concussion treatment plan.

We will work with you to assess your post-concussion health on a range of different measures, and build an individual treatment plan to address your specific symptoms and reach your goals. Often, this will involve a more active approach than acute post-concussion treatment, as we can offer you a supervised, safe way to build back up to your regular activity levels. We can also help address any specific lingering symptoms of a concussion, including headaches, muscle tightness, vertigo and more, through a range of different treatment options – that’s the advantage of a multidisciplinary clinic.

Beyond a treatment plan, we also provide post-concussion baseline testing, which can be an important tool for your health going forward. Once you’ve already had a concussion, when you return to your regular activities, you may have a heightened awareness of the signs and symptoms of a concussion. With yearly baseline testing, our team is more prepared to assess whether you have suffered another concussion – or whether it’s just a headache.

All of DPC’s therapists are licensed health care practitioners, therefore receipts can be issued and covered by most extended health care benefit plans. Please contact us for more information or to book a baseline assessment at 613-435-9144.
