Acupuncture and Dry Needling

Acupuncture and Dry Needling

Acupuncture and dry needling are therapeutic techniques used to help relieve pain, improve muscle function and promote healing. Though they share similarities, each approach has distinct goals and methods. Both treatments involve the insertion of thin needles but their mechanisms and intended outcomes differ. At Dynamic Physiotherapy & Chiropractic, we offer acupuncture and dry needling in Kanata and Stittsville, as part of our holistic pain management and rehabilitation approach.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a healing practice based on Traditional Chinese Medicine that involves placing needles into specific areas of your body, known as acupuncture points. This is used to treat pain and promote healing. Acupuncture helps to restore balance and improves your overall well-being.

What is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a modern, science-based technique often used to treat issues related to your muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and cartilage. Unlike acupuncture, dry needling targets affected tissues, including trigger points in your muscles to alleviate pain, increase muscle activation, improve mobility, reduce inflammation and promote healing. This is achieved by inserting a thin needle into the muscle. While similar to acupuncture in technique, dry needling is typically focused on resolving localized pain in muscles, joints, tendons and tissues. Adding electrical stimulation to the treatment can help enhance the effect.

Frequently Asked Questions About Acupuncture & Dry Needling

Typically acupuncture causes minimal discomfort. The needles are very thin and most patients report feeling only a mild discomfort on insertion and may feel a tingling, warmth or mild ache during treatment. Dry needling can cause some discomfort in the muscles during and after the treatment, in particular, the muscle may feel a little tight, tender or “worked out” after the session.

No, while both involve the use of needles, acupuncture is a holistic approach that focuses on the insertion of needles based on meridians or “energy flows” in the body, whereas dry needling targets muscles and trigger points to relieve pain.

Results vary by individual, but many patients experience relief for several days to weeks. Regular treatments can extend the duration of benefits.

While dry needling and Acupuncture are safe techniques there are some adverse effects that can occur with treatment. The most common are mild bruising and soreness that typically resolve themselves within a day or two. Prior to starting Acupuncture or dry needling your practitioner will review all relevant adverse effects with you.
